This famous Tendai sect temple of Tohoku was established upon the imperial edict of Emperor Seiwa (858-876) in 860 by the priest Jikaku Daishi. Modeled after Hieizan in Kyoto, this temple has a large number of structures, including the Konpon Chudo (important cultural asset), Sanno Omiya, Nyoho-do, Godai-do, etc., along with the Fumetsu-no-Hoto, an "eternal flame" which has been burining continuously for several hundred years. There are also many treasures, such as a wooden Yakushi Nyorai image (cultural asset), the haiku poet Matsuo Basho's "semi-zuka" (cicada mound), and more, all reminders of Yamadera's long and distinctive past. |
