Juhyo (rime covered trees)
Location Yamagata City, Zao; Yonezawa City, Tengendai
Access Zao: 30 min by car from Yamagata Stn, then 20 min by ropeway
Tengendai: 50 min by car from Yonezawa Stn, then 4 min by ropeway
Other Information Extremely "wet" snow from the Sea of Japan is carried by the cold Siberian jetstream, and after being supercooled when compressed upwards by due to going over the Asahi Range, this "particle ice" finally slams into the central Ou Range where it glues itself on to Aomori fir trees. The fir trees are eventually coated throughout the winter season with an extremely thick layer of white ice, ending up to look like bizzare "snow monsters." The juhyo of Zao are particularly famous.
