Led by a fourteen year old, the young boys of the village gather within the shrine, and then with candles in both hands they burst out wearing only straw girdles. The almost naked boys are then doused with cold water in the garden. After that they form a line and run a circuit around the village in order to pray for good health. From this point in time the young men begin their "hyakudo-mairi" (one hundred prayer trips). This festival is well known as a strange ceremony praying for safe birth and health. |
