One of the Three Biggest Festivals in the Shonai region.It is a festival of Tenman-gu Shrine dedicated for Michizane Sugawara, who was a scholar and politician and lived from 845 to 903. People young and old wear kimono underwear, fasten sash belts, hide their face with straw hats and "tenugui"(towel) and serve sake to passersby without speaking. It is said that if you pray to Tenman-gu in this costume for three years, your wishes will come true. Also at Tenman-gu shrine Tengu-mai dance will be performed and a festival parade tour the downtown area. |
