Namegawa Hot Spring (Yonezawa City)

Yamagata is a treasure trove of onsen (hot springs). You can enjoy a relaxing extended vacation at an onsen ryokan (traditional Japanese hotel with an attached hot spring), or you could even take a day trip to an onsen. If you take a day trip, you should look into the affordable one day long plans offered at many ryokan and bathhouses. This month, we would like to introduce you to Namegawa Onsen.

The name of this onsen means “slippery river,” and it is said to have been discovered 250 years ago by a warrior after he slipped while walking along a river. Ever since then, Namegawa Onsen has been known as a hot spring with excellent therapeutic properties. Namegawa Onsen’s Fukushimaya is small inn attached to the hot spring that stands along the mountain stream. It is a beautiful place to view the leaves in fall or the newly growing foliage of spring. The Fukushimaya inn is closed for the winter (November-April), but it is still possible to use the hot spring itself during that time.

Yamagata is a place where you can relieve your stress and enjoy hot springs all year round. There are also many Japanese style inns and delicious restaurants so please feel free to come and enjoy!
