Yonezawa City Area
Yonezawa City is located in the Southernmost portion of Yamagata Prefecture, between Yamagata and Fukushima Prefecture. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Yonezawa on the Yamagata Shinkansen. In Yonezawa City, you can enjoy the grandeur of the four seasons in beautiful natural scenery, surrounded by picturesque mountains to the South, East, and West. Yonezawa is also blessed to be the home of many hot springs (onsen) including the Shirabu Hot Springs and the Onogawa Hot Springs, which are the two most well known of the Yonezawa Hatto, a district made up of eight different hot springs. Yonezawa’s rich cultural and historical lineage as a town built around the feudal castle of the Uesugi family is still alive today. As a result of this heritage, arts and crafts unique to the region such as Sasano Ittobori wood carvings and a variety of woven goods can be found in this area. Also, don’t miss a chance to taste some delicious Yonezawa Beef or Yonezawa Carp, which are famous throughout all of Japan.
Uesugi Shrine
This shrine is devoted to Uesugi Kenshin, a famous commander during the Period of Warring States (1493-1573). The moat is lined with approximately 200 sakura trees that bloom beautifully in the spring, and a winter snow lantern festival is held in February. This is without a doubt the most important sight seeing location in Yonezawa.

- Access: Take the blue, municipal shuttle bus on a clockwise (migimawari) route for approximately 10 minutes to the Uesugi Shrine (Uesugi Jinjya) stop.
