Mt. Zao Ice Monster Light Up (Yamagata City)
February marks the start of the ice monster (juhyo) viewing season in Yamagata. The ice monsters are coniferous trees that become completely covered with snow and ice until they begin to look like gigantic statues of white ice. Famous throughout the world for both their tremendous size and fascinating beauty, the ice monsters of the Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort are a symbol of the Yamagata winter. This is a great time of the year for skiing and snowboarding, snow trekking through the great outdoors, or participating in traditional festivals and winter events.
